It's going to be one long party weekend. My sister-in-law's youngest sister is getting married on Friday. There's the rehersal on the 4th, followed by a party at the groom's parents' house. Then the wedding, followed by a reception at a nearby hotel. Then on Saturday, the bride's parents are having a cookout. I'm turning this into a mini-vacation. I've taken a room at the hotel for three days with a friend and we're going to indulge in room service and late hours to our hearts' content.

I've been exercising my inner Dartha Stewart (*g*) on behalf of the happy couple. He's a graduate of Virginia Tech so they asked me if I would dress a couple of little Hokie birds (the VT mascot -- a rather stylized turkey, actually) as a bride and groom for the groom's cake. It was a fun challenge ("hmmm, your inseam is 1" -- please stop pecking me, sir") to make clothes for 3" stuffed animals. I'll admit I pulled out all the stops. He's got a pleated cummerbund and a bowtie, and his jacket has little satin lapels and a red rose boutiniere. She's practically Lady Di with a pouffy dress, a full-length veil, pearl trim, a rose bouquet, a lace garter, and an Irish 2p tucked into a pocket on her tail. They were so pleased with the birdies that they've decided that instead of having no topper on their wedding cake (they hated everything they saw in the stores) and putting the birds on the groom's cake, they're going to put the birds on the wedding cake and let the groom's cake go topperless. Go, me, I'm fabulous!

And my fabulousity continues -- got a call last night from the mother of the groom (MOG). Could I drop by and help decorate a terrarium? (They're using it as a card box, where people who are giving cards rather than packages can drop them so they won't get lost.) Since I'd basically offered to do whatever whenever (and I'm the kind of person who gets ego-stroked by being needed for this kind of thing), I toddled over about 9:45 p.m. The groom's family is in an uproar as they're trying to get ready for this huge party as well as all the other last-minute things for the wedding (much the same as the bride's family, another scary household!). MOG had a lovely little terrarium of wire and plexi-glass and a bunch of red, white, and blue ribbons. (They got engaged last 4th, the wedding is this 5th, they're going with it, okay?) I worked miracles. Really. It now looks like a festive little Victorian conservatory or railcar, all draped in bunting and ruffles. Hot glue is a good thing.

I'm not a cutesy person, but sometimes, it just works. And it's all elegant-cute, not folksy-cute. ::shudder:: Must. Get. Pictures.

So, three-day work week, then party-hearty four-day weekend, then a regular work week, then up to Shore Leave late Friday afternoon for a long con weekend. I love summer.
