ladyvyola: Rufus the naked mole rat from "Kim Possible" with Santa hat and pom-poms (yuletide)

Confirmation, yet again, as if I needed more, that I so need external deadlines.

If only I could focus my procrastination efforts for good.

On the other hand, at least I read a lot of neat fic whilst whiling away my time. (I prefer whiling to frittering. Frittering always makes me hungry. Mmmmmm, apple fritters....)

*sigh*

If it weren't for LiveJournal's latest round of wacky hijinks, I'd have never realized that my Yuletide letter was privacy-locked.

*sigh*

So here it is again, in the hopes that my patient, long-suffering Yuletide writer might still find it of use. If they did poke around futilely trying to find it, I hope they found last year's letter, since it's pretty much the same information.

Dear Yuletide writer,
I'm a moron but I'll be appreciative! Really! )

Last year, I was insane and offered 61 fandoms for [livejournal.com profile] yuletide. This year, the meds must've kicked in because I only offered 9.

I was matched to the lovely [livejournal.com profile] vivien529 by dint of Neil Gaiman's Neverwhere. Prompts for Divine Secrets of the Ya Ya Sisterhood and Wings of Desire held no interest for me. But the fourth request.... Addams Family Values, Joel/Wednesday. Not a fandom I offered but Vivien's request actually sparked a complete story just by looking at it. I mean, the whole beginning and ending actually appeared in my brain fully formed and phrased. Why can't that happen more often? ::whines:: (Of course, it was the part in the middle that kept me busy on Dec. 19th....)

Anyway, with that kind of inspiration, I had to go with it and I couldn't be more thrilled with the response it's gotten, clearly a testement to just how well-loved the source material is. The consensus is that it's a sweet and very romantic story, which may say more about you guys than it does about me. You be the judge -- go read about the courtship of Joel Glicker and Wednesday Addams as they proceed along

Gah!

I'm sitting in the office with a boatload of work, a strained left calf that causes me to limp like Igor, a strained right arm that makes it hurt to type, a headache, and a low-grade fever (chills and hot flashes - how I've missed you! Not).

At least the chest-rattling cough is (mostly) gone.

Only the glee that is [livejournal.com profile] yuletide is keeping me going. So many good stories I've already read, so many still to look forward to, and I can't wait for the reveal so I can go glom on the brains of the Vorkosigan saga writers.

I am a good girl, I am.

I've only looked at one present this morning -- the [livejournal.com profile] yuletide story written for me -- and it's clear that Santa loves me.

Behavioural Software is a look at Nicky, the operative who "ran" Jason Bourne before the events of the two Bourne movies. Played by Julia Styles, Nicky starts out as a compentent professional secure with her place in the world. By the end of the second film, she's watched Treadstone fall apart, her colleagues lost to murder and suicide, the assassins themselves destroyed by madness, and faced her own death at the hands of an out-of-control Jason Bourne.

Needless to say, she's not in good shape when Behavioural Software opens.

This is the story I wanted without knowing just what I wanted from it. She's a wreck, sure that Bourne is stalking her, just waiting to kill her and destroy the last remnant of Treadstone. It's a stunning evocation of claustrophobia -- the sense of paralysis mixed with the frenzied bursts of panic are such vivid descriptions of fight-or-flight that my heart was in my mouth right along with her. And the resolution as Nicky tries to find absolution and closure is solidly satisfying.

Go. Read!

Dear Yuletide Santa,

My Yuletide philosophy: this might be the only chance to get a story in a certain fandom. I'm not going to get too caught up in pairings and specifics. I'd rather get a good, solid, re-readable story to set the bar and attract more fans.

That said, I was a bit specific in my request details as to story prompts. If any of them spark something for you, great. If not, don't worry. What I've got listed here is more atmospheric; these are broader story elements and themes that I find attractive.

Three of my fandoms deal with espionage/law enforcement -- I like teamwork and competency and characters who are really good at what they do. I like seeing the toll being that good takes on them. I like snark and banter and loaded questions. I like life-and-death secrets. I like style and flash but never at the cost of substance. I like days-in-the-life and I like the fate of the world at stake. I like romance and subtext, slash and het and gen. I like characters who'll die for each other and live for each other and know each other better than anyone else and still have each other's backs.

I like show, not tell. Even the most thoughtful of these characters are people of action, used to making quick decisions and living with the consequences.

For purposes of Yuletide, I'd rather not see: fantasy and/or sci-fi elements in the "mundane" fandoms, PWPs, totally downbeat endings, character death (Constantine is exempt from that caveat, of course!).

Really, though, in the end, I'm easy. I like good writing. Write a story that you enjoy, that you're proud of, that you're thrilled will be one the stories people point to when they talk about this little fandom. Write that story and we'll both be happy.

Hope that helps and doesn't add to the inevitable, and traditional, Yuletide pressure!

Dear [livejournal.com profile] yuletide,

I love you!

Just got my assignment.

First option: meh. Vaguely know it, didn't offer it, not interested.

Second option: interesting. Offered, could happily go with it.

Fourth option: sounds vaguely familiar. Quick search reveals that I've heard of it, could be interesting if I feel like learning the source.

But!

Third option: hey! Didn't offer it but know and love the source. Characters and details actually spark an inspirational vision. Go Team Synapse! It's third option for the win.

Yuletide, I kiss you with church tongue.

Of course, soon you'll be kicking my ass and turning into an abusive boyfriend, I just know it. And I'll be standing on the sidewalk in a thin housedress, holding an icepack to my black eye, and telling the nice officer, "He really can't help it, you know? I make him so mad sometimes. It's nothing. Really." But for now, it's all champagne and roses, baby.

But first, now for something completely different. GIP!

Anyway....

I've gone and made my nominations to the new big list for [livejournal.com profile] yuletide. Heh. I've got less than no interest in Miami Vice the series but the movie pushes many of my "need fic" buttons. And Dexter! Love the books, loved the first ep on Showtime's free weekend, have enlisted [livejournal.com profile] i_am_racerx to record the season for me. Yay for serial killers! You know, I am definitely offering to write Dexter. What would be more fun, to try to recreate Dexter's own voice or to be convincing as one of the other characters? Hmmmm.
