1. Memo to Avril Lavigne: Heavy eye make-up and l33t spelling does not make you a deep thinker or the visionary voice of your generation. Makin' the establishment shake in its stylish yet affordable boots you are not. You are a teeny. Someday you'll get over it; it happens to everyone. (It's called growing up.) And sweetie, feel free to go ahead and call yourself punk. But understand that saying you are punk will never, never, never make "Complicated" anything but a pretty pop anthem.
2. Memo to Eminem: So you've finally discovered the latest rap accessory -- your daughter. But somehow, filling "her" song with a rant against her mother smacks of emotional blackmail. "Look at how much I love you. I'm rich and famous and talented and I'll tell the whole world how wonderful you are. But your mother is a bitch and a whore and you better not forget that or maybe I'll stop telling the world I love you." And you might be perfectly justified in how you feel about your mother. But using her granddaughter as a weapon against her can only be damaging to your daughter. Good men -- good fathers -- don't treat their children this way. Not in public, not in private.
3. Memo to Linkin Park: What were you thinking? Hybrid Theory is a wonderful album, one of my current favorites. You really hit the mark with your combination of rap and alternate rock. (And appealed to the 17 year-old boy lurking within me!) But Reanimation is hideous! A good re-mix should either expand the appeal of a song or recast it in a new light. These do neither. Your raps are overshadowed by guest voices and obscured by the re-mixes. Your lyrical passages are robbed of all intensity. The songs don't end with emotional artistry anymore, they just ... peter ... out.
