Dear Yuletide writer

First of all, good luck! I'm all over the place this year and I am truly amazed and grateful that I've got a match. (ETA: Or a pinch hitter! I've gotten pinch hitters before and I love you, too! You chose me! You brave, weird soul, you.)

So, first the big picture then a little more specificity on what I like about each request.

My Yuletide philosophy: this might be the only chance to get a story in a certain fandom. I'm not going to get too caught up in pairings and specifics. I'd rather get a good, solid, re-readable story to set the bar and attract more fans.

I like good grammar and a firm grasp of English. If I have to make a choice, I'll go with voice and atmosphere over plot -- again, this might be the only story I read in this fandom and I'd like something that truly evokes it. But I'm also greedy, so a kick-ass plot would be very nice. Please put it right next to the pony, the plastic rocket ship, and the keys to Jensen Ackles.

For purposes of Yuletide, I'd rather not see: PWPs, totally downbeat endings, character death (okay, Zhanna can totally go die in a fire ;p)

That said, I was a bit specific in my request details as to story prompts. If any of them spark something for you, great. If not, don't worry. In the end, I'm easy. I like good writing. Write a story that you enjoy, that you're proud of, that you're thrilled will be one the stories people point to when they talk about this little fandom. Write that story and we'll both be happy.

Edward & Mrs. Simpson

Any (Edward VIII, Wallis Warfield Simpson, Thelma Furness, Freda Dudley Ward)

This is the 1978 British miniseries that aired in the US on Masterpiece Theater in 1980. There are seven episodes, available on Netflix Watch Now in the US.

Okay, I’m fascinated by the players in the abdication crisis but I’m certainly not sympathetic to our starring couple. How people can have so much yet give so little....

So, there’s the realistic approach – Freda realizing how she’s been frozen out, Thelma unwittingly giving over the reins and coming back to find there’s been a bloodless coup, either of them looking back and wondering what could have been changed. Or David thinking about the women in his life, what they gave (up) and what they received. What if Wallis had stopped her divorce proceedings? What might have happened then?

But if you look at this prompt and think, “What Yuletide really needs is a total crack-fic take on the abdication crisis!” well, don’t let me stop you. Maybe it needs to be re-written as a high school AU, or as space pirates.

All I know is that I’d love to see where you go.

Prey series – John Sandford

Any (Lucas Davenport, Letty Davenport, Sam Davenport, Sarah Carey)

Ah, Lucas and his kids. Adopted Letty, baby Sam, forgotten Sarah. What’s it like to have Davenport for a dad? Do Letty and Sarah ever meet? What does Sam want to be when he grows up? With Buried Prey we finally get a look at young Officer Davenport, so sharp he’ll cut himself but still so raw. There’s a lot of room between the summer of ’85, when doesn’t push against a bad case, and Rules of Prey, where he’s sure enough to set up the maddog.

I love this series because you never know what kind of story you’re going to get – police procedural, serial killer thriller, cat-and-mouse heist caper, Murphy’s Law spiraling-out-of-control petty crime leading to baffling murder. There’s very bleak landscapes (internal and external) and humor across the spectrum. The characters actually grow and change as the series progresses and actions have real consequences.

Star Wars: Revelations

Any (Zhanna, Taryn Anwar, Cade, Declan)

Available at http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TDxZkHCq4Tk

There are so many unexplored stories here! How did Taryn and Declan meet? What daring adventures inspired Cade and Raux to trust Declan so much? Where did Declan come from? How many hidden Jedi did Taryn unwittingly betray? What happened when Taryn discovered the truth and confronted (or escaped from) Zhanna? Did Zhanna have a plan for getting rid of Vader? Did Declan wait for Taryn? What happened after the movie?

I like how this fanfilm tried to slip as gracefully as it could between the two trilogies and answer some of the questions left hanging. Sure, it's been Jossed but it made a valiant attempt.

Once again, good luck and I salute you!
